RR Transport Case Study
Read about how we worked with RR Transport, a leading provider of logistics and transportation services in the UK.
In the fast-paced logistics and transportation industry, efficiency, accuracy and customer satisfaction are paramount. RR Transport, a leading provider of logistics and transportation services in the UK, recognised the need to elevate their operational capabilities to meet the growing demands of their clients. Faced with challenges such as complex inventory management, fluctuating order volumes, and the need for real-time data access, RR Transport embarked on a journey to integrate a sophisticated Warehouse Management System (WMS).
This case study explores how RR Transport partnered with THINK Inventory Solutions to implement a cutting-edge WMS tailored to their specific needs. The study highlights the initial challenges faced by RR Transport, the strategic implementation process and the transformative outcomes achieved through this partnership. By leveraging advanced WMS technology, RR Transport not only streamlined their warehouse operations but also set a new standard for efficiency and reliability in the logistics industry.
Join us as we delve into RR Transport’s success story, showcasing how the right technology can revolutionise warehouse management, enhance operational efficiency and drive business growth.
A Complete WMS System for a New 3PL Warehouse
RR Transport secured a significant new contract to store a variety of automotive consumer goods, necessitating a complete WMS system for their new third-party logistics (3PL) warehouse. The project’s key requirements and milestones included:
- ASN Generation: Advanced Shipment Notifications (ASNs) were generated for incoming raw materials, with a comparison to receipt quantity generated. A variance report was automatically emailed to the client.
- Goods Receipt Scanning: Goods were scanned upon receipt into the warehouse.
- Putaway Process: Pallets were scanned to their respective locations during the putaway process.
- Picking Process: Goods were picked using the FIFO (First In, First Out) sequence.
- Stock Control: Online stock control was maintained for real-time visibility.
- Tight Timeline: The entire system needed to be fully operational within eight weeks from approval.
- Automated Invoicing: 3PL automated invoicing reports were required to show weekly storage and RH&D (Receiving, Handling, and Distribution) costs.
- Tailored Imports: Custom Excel imports were created for ASN and order creation.
THINK’s Approach to Implementation
To address these complex requirements and ensure a successful WMS implementation, THINK Inventory Solutions adopted a meticulous and collaborative approach:
- Test System Installation: A WMS ‘Test’ system was installed, enabling RR Transport to configure and test all processes thoroughly.
- Client Collaboration: Close collaboration with the 3PL’s client ensured that the master data was formatted correctly and included all necessary information.
- Training: Superusers were comprehensively trained to ensure a smooth transition and operational proficiency.
- Planned Go-Live: The go-live was meticulously planned over a weekend, including a full stock take and was successfully implemented on time within the eight-week timeframe.
- Phase 2 Planning: Work has commenced on Phase 2 of the implementation, which includes integration with the client’s SAP system.
Transformative Outcomes
Through the strategic implementation of THINK Inventory Solutions’ advanced WMS, RR Transport achieved remarkable improvements in operational efficiency and accuracy. The ability to handle complex inventory management, real-time data access and automated reporting not only met the immediate needs of the new contract but also better positioned RR Transport for future growth and success within the logistics industry.
I have been very impressed with the THINK business as a whole. We have not always had the best experience with IT providers and at first, I was sceptical of the promises made as we were operating on very tight timescales. However, I must say that everyone in the THINK team has been brilliant. They are very proactive, and, in my view, their strongest attribute is their operational knowledge, they genuinely have a true understanding of how a warehouse should operate. The approach and experience they have brought to the project along with the speed of implementation has been exceptional. The feedback we have received from the operatives is that the system is very user friendly, and we have found that the team has taken to it very well. I would highly recommend them and look forward to expanding our working relationship in future.
The key to this successful implementation was to ensure the client had early access to WMS by creating a ‘Test’ system. Our team spent time on-site so we could understand the business and then train and guide the key users. This enabled them to populate master data directly in the system and then try out the key warehouse processes. Hand-held barcode scanners were introduced during this phase and all users had the opportunity to try out the key receiving and picking functions. Critically, the ‘hands-on’ use of the system and the early refinement of processes enabled the system to be configured well in advance of the go-live, allowing the client to concentrate on the practical aspects of performing a stocktake covering thousands of items of palletised product
